As a homeowner, designing a kitchen of your dreams is something not everyone gets to do. As you look over everything you may or may not want to do, you’ll have to narrow down your options quickly. The truth is that unless you have an unlimited budget, you simply can’t do everything you want to. So how do you decide which upgrades are worth the money? Keep reading to get some advice from Cabinet Magic on what’s worth the splurge and what isn’t.
4 Things That Are Worth the Splurge
First, let’s talk about a few things that we suggest are absolutely worth the splurge in a kitchen remodeling project.
- A second sink. We recommend adding a second sink and putting it outside of the main cooking and cleanup area. This allows a second chef to help, for guests to wash their hands before dinner, or for someone to be washing dishes as another continues cooking.
- Cabinet refacing. Instead of replacing the cabinets entirely, we highly recommend refacing your cabinets. The way it works is simple. We replace the faces and sides of your cabinets, along with hardware. The basic setup of the cabinets remains the same, but you get a brand-new look for a fraction of the price you’d pay to replace them altogether.
- Soft-close drawer glides with full extensions. Install these either under or on the sides of your drawers. They let you pull the drawer out completely so that you can easily reach deep into any drawer. The soft-close eliminates the sound and danger of slamming, as well as the damage slamming can do to drawers.
- Paneled cabinet ends. These are essentially oversized doors that can be affixed to the exposed sides of your cabinets. They give your cabinets a furniture-like look and a custom-built feeling.
3 Things That Aren’t Worth the Splurge
Now, let’s consider a few things that may seem like a great idea but end up not being worth the added money.
- Glazed, crackled, or distressed finishes. If you love this look then we have bad news for you. Adding this type of finish can increase the costs of having cabinets installed or refinished by as much as 30%. As time goes on, they’ll also be less and less in style and are likely to need to be replaced as they go out of style.
- Pot fillers. Do these make it easier to fill your pasta pot? They sure do, but they also lead to carting a lot of boiling water all the way to the sink when the pasta is done. Unless you’re running a full-time Italian kitchen from home, we don’t believe that this is generally worth the added cost.
- Wine fridge. Once again, this may be worth the money but only in the specific situation in which you actually have a use for 18 bottles of wine chilled to the perfect temperature at all times. For everyone else, this is a splurge that’s not likely to add value to your home.
These are just our ideas but the bottom line is that whatever’s worth it to you is a worthy splurge. To find out more about the services we offer, reach out to Cabinet Magic at 800-570-4194.
